California Violence Intervention and Prevention (CalVIP) Grant Statewide Dashboard
Thank you for accessing the Board of State and Community Corrections' (BSCC) data dashboard for the California Violence Intervention and Prevention (CalVIP) Grant Program, Cohort 4. The CalVIP Cohort 4 grant period began July 1, 2022 and ends December 31, 2025. The State Legislature established the CalVIP Program in 2017, which provides funding for cities and community-based organizations with the goal of reducing violence in the city and adjacent areas.
In October 2019 Governor Newsom signed the Break the Cycle of Violence Act (AB 1603). AB 1603 codified the establishment of CalVIP and defined its purpose: to improve public health and safety by supporting effective violence reduction initiatives in communities that are disproportionately impacted by violence, particularly group-member involved homicides, shootings, and aggravated assaults. The Break the Cycle of Violence act specifies that CalVIP grants shall be used to support, expand and replicate evidence-based violence reduction initiatives, including but not limited to Hospital-based violence intervention programs, Evidence-based street outreach programs, and Focused deterrence strategies.
The dashboard is updated on a quarterly basis. Detailed information about the CalVIP is available on the CalVIP webpage.
To verify the timeframe of the information presented, please see the 'Data Current As Of' date on the dashboard.
Different Cohort Groups
In November 2021, the BSCC released the CalVIP Cohort 4 Request for Proposals (RFP), which was later re-released in June 2022. This re-release resulted in the division of CalVIP Cohort 4 into two separate cohorts: Cohort 4 and Cohort 4.5. Due to differences in the timing of Quarterly Progress Report (QPR) submissions, Cohort 4.5 had to report separately for Quarter 1 and Quarter 2, whereas Cohort 4 reported Quarters 1 and 2 together.
CalVIP Cohort 4.5 data for Quarter 1 and Quarter 2 will exhibit lower counts compared to Cohort 4 (Quarter 1 & 2) due to the fewer grantees in Cohort 4.5. However, subsequent quarters will include data from both Cohort 4 and Cohort 4.5 grantees, although the quarter dates do differ. To view quarter dates, please see the tooltips at the bottom of the Statewide Dashboard main page.
Filtering Data
This dashboard offers interactive filters to refine the data displayed in the visualizations. These filters are interconnected to ensure only relevant options appear based on your selections.
Grantee Filter: Select a specific grantee from this filter to view data pertaining only to that organization.
Quarter Filter: Choose a specific quarter from this filter to focus on data from a specific timeframe.
Default View: If you leave both filters unselected, the visualizations will showcase data for all grantees and all quarters combined.
This dashboard serves as a platform for monitoring the utilization of CalVIP grant funds in supporting evidence-based violence reduction initiatives. Data is sourced directly from quarterly progress reports submitted by each CalVIP grantee.

Caveats:
There are several caveats to keep in mind when reviewing these data:
- The trends visualizations reflected in the dashboard are subject to change over time as data are updated or revised.
- While multiple grantees may provide the same type of program or service (e.g., case management, hospital-based violence intervention, substance use disorder treatment, etc.), the implementation and methodologies used by each grantee may differ.
- The services provided vary by grantee. Not all grantees provide all services.
- Grantees started services at different times.
- Grantees are required to use CalVIP funds to support, expand and replicate evidence-based violence reduction strategies “that seek to interrupt cycles of violence and retaliation in order to reduce the incidence of homicides, shootings, and aggravated assaults. (Pen. Code, § 14131, subd. (c).)
- The BSCC strives to ensure data accuracy through verification efforts. However, some margin for error remains.
